Fabric Information

Tinsmiths’ Natural Fabrics are predominantly made from natural fibres. These fabrics can shrink when washed and can be sensitive to changes in humidity, with a typical shrinkage of 3-5% on first wash. Dry cleaning and FR treatments can also cause shrinkage so allow extra material to take this into account.

Colour Variation

Colour variations are unavoidable between production batches. We cannot guarantee that current production will match previous orders or original samples. Where an exact match is required please request a ‘stock cutting’ for your approval prior to ordering.

Measurements; Pattern Repeat and Fabric Width

Details of both fabric width & pattern repeat may vary from batch to batch. Please allow a variation of +/- 3cm from stated measurements. Where critical please ask for confirmation of current batch specification.

Sun Fading

We recommend always lining curtains to protect the face fabric from fading.

To prolong the life of curtains it is a good idea to swap the curtains over from time to time to keep the fabric area exposed to sunlight at a minimum.

For bay or corner windows, where the curtain face will be unprotected when open by curtain lining we recommend the use of UV window film.

100% Linen where the colour is described as 'Natural' are unbleached and undyed and as such can be more prone to showing fading than linens which have been bleached and dyed.

Upholstered furniture and window seats can fade in sunlight; in south facing rooms or where furniture is close to windows we recommend the use of   UV window film.

100% Linen

Natural Linen can have occasional ‘slubs’ in the weave which are not faults but characteristic of the fibre.

Upholstery Fabric

The fabrics which are suitable for upholstery use can be found in the Upholstery Fabric category on the Tinsmiths website. Refer to the fabric description for the ‘rub test’ or upholstery grade of each fabric.

Unless otherwise stated all fabrics are not FR (flame retardant) treated and will require treatment for upholstery use. We can provide both domestic and commercial FR treatments for upholstery fabric. We can also provide FR treatment for commercial curtain fabric.

Washing

Refer to the particular fabric for care instructions, not all our fabrics are washable. In general, furnishing fabrics are not suited to regular washing and cleaning which can diminish both the handle and finish of the cloth. When washing Tinsmiths’ fabrics, use a powder/liquid that has no bleach or optical whiteners, wash at 30°c and do not tumble dry.

Made to Measure Curtains and blinds

DO NOT WASH. Hand-made interlined curtains can only be dry cleaned by a curtain specialist. Dry cleaning can also cause shrinkage.
