Ukrainian Hand Embroidered Rushnyk Cloth UR4
A long, rectangular piece of linen made in the early C20th, hand embroidered and characteristic of a traditional Ukrainian Rushnyk celebration cloth.
Typically, a Rushnyk is embroidered in red thread, symbolising life, and is used for ceremonial rituals from birth to death; it is the first cloth a newborn is placed upon; it is used as part of the wedding ceremony and, at the end of life, it is placed across the coffin or used to lower it into the ground. Each cloth is a unique piece of textile folk history.
These pieces have all of the idiosyncrasies of an aged and loved piece of cloth so small marks, stains and signs of wear are to be expected and are an inherent part of their charm.
