Winchcombe Pottery
Winchcombe Pottery was established in 1926 by Michael Cardew, a former student of Bernard Leach, on the site of a pottery dating back to the early 1800s. Specialising in wood-fired domestic stoneware, the pottery remains standing a mile outside the ancient town of Winchcombe in the Cotswolds and is one of the longest running craft potteries in England.
Cardew was keen to see his pottery in regular daily use which is a principle still apparent at Winchcombe Pottery today, continuing to produce a range of high quality, handmade pottery for use in the home. In addition to their traditional tableware, Winchcombe also produce one-off and limited range pieces which allow current lead potters, Matt Grimmett and Joseph Fuller the chance to experiment with form, slips and glazes using locally sourced materials such as clay from the River Isbourne and wood ash from trees around the pottery.
