Bathroom Lighting ZonesBathroom Lighting and IP Ratings

Bathroom lights must meet IP ratings and guidelines and are divided into different ‘Zones’ depending on the level of protection required:

  • Zone 2 & 3 – products marked as IP44 (or higher)
  • Zone 1 – products marked as IP65 (or higher)

For safety reasons, the main bathroom light must be switched on by a pull cord or a light switch situated outside the bathroom.

During installation, ensure that any rubber seals, gaskets and grommets are intact and correctly in position.

If in any doubt, always consult a qualified electrician.

Exterior Lights

IP44 (or higher) is required for general exterior lights. Products with a higher IP rating will be required where the situation is close to sprinklers or water features. During installation, ensure that any rubber seals, gaskets and grommets are intact and correctly in position. Exterior lights do not come with PIR sensors unless otherwise stated. However your electrician should be able to fit a remote PIR sensor for use with any of our exterior lights. Use a qualified electrician to ensure that all outdoor wiring and sockets are properly installed and protected.

Galvanised Lights

Galvanised finishes are extremely robust and used to prevent rusting in steel and iron. Galvanising is often used in industrial or agricultural settings and is achieved by dripping the finished fitting into hot molten zinc. The process inevitably leaves runs and rough areas of zinc, these are part and parcel of the finish and do not mean that the fitting is faulty or sub-standard. When new the finish is quite a bright silver which over time softens to a dull matt grey similar to the surface of old aluminium saucepans.
