John Ingledew – Type Faces Exhibition

Date: 20th March – 11th April 2026

Venue: Tinsmiths Homeware Shop, High Street, Ledbury, Herefordshire, HR8 1DS

An exhibition of ceramic pieces by John Ingledew. Decorated using the imprints from antique wooden letterpress blocks to create a unique series of pottery ‘Type faces’.

John Ingledew (b.1960) is a prominent figure in photography and design. Based in Stroud, Gloucestershire, John trained at St Martin’s School of Art where he later taught for many years. John’s undisciplined approach to creativity has seen him work with photography, printmaking, textiles and collage, as well as teaching Graphic Design, Fine Art and Fashion.

Over the last five years John has turned his attention to working with clay and has combined this interest with his love of letterpress. After seeing some of John’s work using type blocks pressed into clay, Tinsmiths’ Phoebe Clive suggested a collaboration with Ledbury’s legendary Tilley Printing.
Established over 150 years ago Tilley Printing continues to thrive as a traditional letterpress printer,
today run by Martin Clarke. John was allowed to delve into Tilley’s incredible, historic collection of wooden type, and the Type Faces series of plates is the result.

“It has been fantastic to work with these beautiful type blocks over the last few months, some are
antique and unique to Tilley’s. I’ve loved working with their shapes and forms in a different medium trying to make characters out of all these characters.
