Jonny Hannah – Letterpress Posters

In spring 2024 Jonny Hannah visited Ledbury to work at the Tilley printworks alongside Martin Clark. With a genius for typesetting Jonny was so obviously in his element at the Tilleys, and he set about making 3 posters for Tinsmiths. The brief was to produce a poster to celebrate Tinsmiths 20th anniversary, a poster to celebrate 60 years of Martins work at the Tilley Printing and a ‘Ledburyshire’ poster. Combining the type so perfectly with linocut elements the results are fantastic, full of the verve and energy of Jonny’s work.

The Poster celebrating Martins time at the Printworks is a fantasy gig poster for Martin’s 1970’s band; The Pewke Band. Printing gig posters for the then thriving music venue, Malvern Winter Gardens, (hard to imagine now that the likes of Led Zeppelin appeared there!) was an important strand for the printworks at that time and Martin also played the venue with various bands too. Jonny, whose current band The Postmen, played at our 2024 exhibition opening, ceased on this as a theme – so for one night only ‘Ledbury Legends’ The Pewke Band play the Winter Gardens with support fro, The Postmen!

‘Once more dear friends to Ledburyshire’ as John Masefield didn’t quite say! Jonnys Ledburyshire poster which is rich with Ledburyshire motifs – cider apples, poetry, Wallers’ sausages, the Eastnor obelisk, Poetry, the Ledbury Swifts,Elizabeth Barret Browning and Tinsmiths!

Finally, ‘Useful & beautiful’, 20 years of Tinsmiths, and a great outing for some of the really huge type from Tilley Printings collection.
