Carole Glover Ceramicist

On leaving Derby University, Carole pursued her love of pottery by assisting ‘wood fire’ potters in Devon before setting up her own studio in Stafford where she continues to be based. Influenced by slipware potters from the sixteenth and seventeenth century, Carole aims for a simplicity of form to enhance her ornate style of slipware decoration. Through the use of colour and traditional techniques for creating texture from these periods, Carole makes a range of pots which provide both a tactile and visual experience. Her work includes hand-built and carefully observed, native bird figures and thrown domestic vessels. Carole applies a fritted lead-based honey glaze to either the bisque or green-ware pots. They are then allowed to dry completely before being fired in a gas or wood-fired kiln.

“I hand throw red earthenware clay on a homemade, momentum wheel and then slip decorate the green-ware (unfired clay) using only four basic coloured slips. My slip decorating includes a variety of techniques; trailing, pouring, dipping, brushing, sponging, jewelling and feathering. Using these techniques I am able to achieve a wide range of tones and hues to what appears to be a limited colour palette. Depending on the time of year and levels of humidity, the slip-glazed pot (which can include the written word), is then ready to be bisque fired (without a layer of glaze) or raw glazed fired.” Carole Glover

Carole’s work can be found in private and national collections. You will also find a regular selection of pieces available for purchase through Tinsmiths.
