Hortus Conclusus Collection

For his collaboration with Tinsmiths, Clive Hicks-Jenkins took inspiration from the medieval tradition of an enclosed garden, Hortus Conclusus. Drawing on the idea of it being a place for solace and protection in nature. Clive’s beautiful cushion designs stem from a series of original paintings and feature three walled gardens, each containing a creature; a Hippocampus, a white Hart and a Unicorn, surrounded by associated foliate or watery motifs.

“The enclosed garden has, since inception, been a place of meditation and pleasure, and Elizabethan paintings show enclosed gardens and parterres in which ladies and gentlemen read poetry, play music and enjoy good company. It is a place of love and romance and forms a powerful and enduring sense of identity for an island nation which finds inspiration and comfort in nature.”
