About the Maker
Edmund Davies category collage

Edmund Davies is a studio potter based in Norwich. His practice revolves around the production of beautiful, functional ceramics – made both on and off the wheel. His work takes influence from historical ceramics, contemporary design and the material properties of clay.

After graduating with a BA in architecture, Edmund’s attention returned to a former interest in pottery which began as a teenager, and which developed into his current passion for throwing on the wheel, and a change of career plan.

Today, Edmund not only creates his own range of ceramics, but he is also the cofounder of Helgate Pottery in Norwich, a community ceramics studio, with an open yet rigorous approach to making and thinking about pots.

Edmund Davies Checked Mugs Brown EDMU2

£42.00

A striking mug with checked design by Norwich potter, Edmund Davies.

Edmund’s distinctive checkerboard pattern is created using a wax-resist technique. This involves applying wax to certain areas of the vessel which then prevents the glaze from sticking to those parts. After firing, the waxed areas remain unglazed but ‘toasted’. Each of those marks is made individually and patiently by hand making each mug unique and bearing evidence of the potter’s craftsmanship.

Washing by hand will prolong the life of this piece.
