Emma Carlow Large Whistle – Cockerel ECWL1
This magnificent, upright cockerel is a unique clay whistle handmade by Sussex-based artist, Emma Carlow. The whistle ‘mechanism’ is tucked inside the cockerel’s tail.
Emma’s collection for Tinsmiths has been inspired by the carvings of the Herefordshire School of Romanesque Sculpture, in particular the incredible carvings on the stone font at St. Michael’s Church in Castle Frome, Herefordshire, dated around 1170.
Her recent discovery of an inlay method of decoration in clay popular in the C19th, and particular to East Sussex where Emma lives, has led to further experimentation which can be seen in her work for Tinsmiths. Markings on each piece are incised into the clay while it is still damp and then filled with a soft white clay, which is then scraped back to reveal the pattern once it has dried.
