Emma Carlow is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Lewes, Sussex. At the root of Emma creativity is research- based practice. Emma claims that making is central to her work and life, along with make-believe and telling stories. This allows her to view the world with different eyes and to travel through time and space. She interprets her discoveries to tell new stories and create alternative realities.

Folk art has had the biggest influence on Emma’s work, she admits that she has learnt more about life, the world and humanity by studying folk art than watching the news. The pieces she makes are a result of this.

Emma’s collection for Tinsmiths has been inspired by the carvings of the Herefordshire School of Romanesque Sculpture. Her recent discovery of an inlay method of decoration in clay popular in the C19th, and particular to East Sussex where Emma lives, has led to further experimentation which can be seen in her work for the exhibition. Markings on each piece are incised into the clay while it is still damp and then filled with a soft white clay, which is then scraped back to reveal the pattern once it has dried.

Emma exhibits regularly and her work has sold internationally through the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy and Yorkshire Sculpture Park. She is also the founding member of the Scherzo Collective.
