About the Maker
Bill Sargent Pargetting work on a cloth background and on an easel

Bill Sargent is one the UK’s highest regarded pargetters. Based in mid-Suffolk, Bill’s career began in the 1960s with a formal apprenticeship in plastering which included studying at Hertfordshire College of Building. Thereafter he worked with his father, continuing a tradition of conservation plasterwork and pargetting begun by his grandfather in 1926, throughout the Anglia region. Today, Bill is helped to continue this tradition by a small team of dedicated craftspeople.

Bills work can be seen in Suffolk, Essex, Kent and Norfolk, covering most types of conservation plasterwork and pargetting. This includes conservation work for listed buildings, lime washing and lime plaster moulding work.

His work varies from clay-lump and brick, to timber framed period properties, using materials such as clay plasters, chalk lime and sand lime putty plasters to produce a traditional finish and preserve the property.

Pargetted Panel – Beehive BPSO9

£1,050.00

**COLLECTION FROM OUR LEDBURY SHOP ONLY**

This large and stunning, lime plaster, pargetted panel features a relief design of a beehive and medieval figure being swarmed by bees. Handcrafted by Suffolk-based, third-generation pargetter, Bill Sargent.

Pargetting is the application of ornamental lime plasterwork to a flat surface. Dating back to the 16th century, it is more commonly associated with the exterior of buildings, and in particular those in East Anglia. Pargetting is now classed as an endangered craft form by the UK’s Heritage Crafts forum, with only a handful of makers such as Bill, still practicing the craft in England.
