Pilgrim Badge Cockerel
£12.00
Brooch made from lead-free pewter in the style of a C15th pilgrim badge. Fastens to clothing or bags via a pin on reverse.
Popular in the latter part of the medieval period, the pilgrim badge was a souvenir bought at the site of a holy shrine to commemorate a pilgrimage. Thought to imbue religious power through its contact with the holy relics at the shrine, these badges were thought of as more than a decorative piece but as a talisman or secondary relic.
Cockerels were symbols of both virility and vigilance – hence its common use for weathervanes, turning in all directions to look for the powers of evil.
