Pilgrim Badge Nativity Star
£15.90
Brooch made from lead-free pewter in the style of a C14th pilgrim badge. Fastens to clothing or bags via a pin on reverse.
Popular in the latter part of the medieval period, the pilgrim badge was a souvenir bought at the site of a holy shrine to commemorate a pilgrimage. Thought to imbue religious power through its contact with the holy relics at the shrine, these badges were thought of as more than a decorative piece but as a talisman or secondary relic.
The Nativity Star symbol was often associated with pilgrimages to Canterbury or Peterborough where relics of the crib were kept.
