Emily Sutton Artist

Emily Sutton studied at Edinburgh College of Art and Rhode Island School of Design, graduating in 2008. With a keenly observant eye, Yorkshire born Emily is known for her distinctive style of highly detailed illustrative work.

Based in York, Emily takes inspiration from the wildlife and landscape of her surroundings and from her home which is filled with collections of curiosities unearthed from antique and junk shops and car boot finds, evidence of her fascination with folk art, Victoriana and mid-twentieth century artists such as Edward Bawden. These personal treasures; bits of crockery, wind-up toys, etc., are transformed from the everyday and ordinary into the extraordinary through Emily’s drawings, prints and embroidered work.  The magical world Emily creates is also perfect for use as book illustrations, which has resulted in collaborations with publishers such as Walker Books, Penguin and Faber & Faber and authors such as Nicola Davis.

Emily Sutton has had major solo exhibitions at Yorkshire Sculpture Park and The Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh.
