Railroading Fabrics enables you to use the width of the fabric as the length of the curtain or blind. It is particularly useful with some of our Extra Wide Fabrics as the width of these fabrics is 280cm. This means that provided that your curtain is less than 260cm long you can make a curtain of any width with out having to join widths together, giving a seamless finish.

Not all extra-wide fabrics can be railroaded. If a fabric has a design with a clear directional pattern; for example flowers on stems, trees, figures or any motif with an obvious “right way up” – then the fabric can only be used in its intended orientation, with the pattern running vertically.. The fabrics which are suitable to Railroad are; Extra Wide Plain Fabrics – for example Extra Wide Berrow, Extra Wide Stripes which are railroaded – for example Extra Wide Hector, Extra Wide Sheer Fabrics and Extra Wide Lining.

Remember Extra Wide Lining can be used to line curtains that you are making in standard width cloth as well as those in Extra Wide Fabrics, this can at least reduce the joining of widths of lining which for wide curtains certainly saves time.

Railroading can be a very useful way to make wide curtains with fewer seams and a cleaner overall appearance, particularly when using extra-wide fabrics. Whether a fabric can be railroaded depends entirely on the design, so it is always worth checking before ordering. Used appropriately, it can simplify curtain making, reduce joins, and make the most of the generous width of Extra Wide fabrics.
